A dust-up, out in lowsec, was a fight or a skirmish — plain and simple. Not a wardec, not a full coalition brawl, but a scrap between pilots that usually ended with somebody's pod getting dumped into a new ship.
The term came natural to the space lanes. Out in the asteroid belts and around the acceleration gates, when two gangs went at each other — drones, autocannons, maybe a bubble going up at the last second — they'd light up the local chat with smack talk that'd echo clear across the constellation. Pilots watching from the station undock could see the wreckage on their overview before they even heard about it in corp chat. So a fight became a dust-up, named for the kind of low-stakes chaos it represented.
It wasn't necessarily a podding affair. A dust-up was more like two roaming gangs settling a disagreement over a gate camp, or a couple of Rifter pilots who'd been sitting on the same belt too long and took offense at each other's presence. Short, hot, and over quick. If a carrier dropped on grid, it stopped being a dust-up and turned into something else entirely.
The word carried a kind of casual shrug with it — capsuleers who lived dangerous lives in lowsec didn't make much fuss over losing a frigate. "Oh, there was a little dust-up over in Amamake last night" meant don't get excited, nobody lost a capital, it was just pilots being pilots.
It was a word that fit the space — cold, unforgiving, and to the point.
